The Classic Cosmopolitan

‘I couldn’t understand a word she was saying, but I felt I had in my possession all the Italian I’d ever need to know: Dolce, Dolce, Dolce.’ – Carrie from Sex in The City

I love that line from Sex in The City. I relate to that line so much. But this is how I read it for myself – ‘I couldn’t understand a word she was saying, but I felt I had in my possession all the French I’d ever need to know: Chanel, Chanel, Chanel.’

You see a well made Classic Cosmopolitan and you automatically visualize these highly fashionable four women from Sex in the City walking into a bar and making heads turn and oozing glamour all the way. For me, a Classic Cosmopolitan means style, glamour, and potential (don’t get me started on potential).

I’m sure it must be a popular bar cocktail. Every time there is a bar scene in the movies or on a TV show, I see glamorous looking women holding this sensuous looking cocktail – the nail paint and the lipstick invariably matching with the color of this chosen beverage. (sorry!! My imagination usually springs from the movies and TV Shows that I watch).

Since we are talking about bars, I must mention here one thing though. The first time I walked into a bar was back in Jan 2006 in Manhattan, NYC with my ex-sister-in-law and I had ordered a cup of black coffee. It was snowing outside and the inside of the bar was semi-dark and the coffee felt delicious.

Now I order cocktails or wine.

Soooo!! How come I didn’t think about making a Classic Cosmopolitan all these times?

I know why. Because Wine and Gin & Tonic have been my favorites. Being a stubborn person, it’s very hard for me to change my favorites., and, secondly, I usually avoid making cocktails because of the amount of sugar that they require you to add. But this is Holiday season and starting from today I have a 4-day holiday (by the time this post is published, my vacation might be over, but still) I want to ring in 2017 with this glamorous looking Classic Cosmopolitan and I think, so do you.

Here is some trivia. Originally, a Cosmopolitan was made with Gordon’s Gin, Cointreau, lemon juice and raspberry syrup. But over the years Gin substituted for Vodka and Raspberry juice substituted for Cranberry juice. So a very basic and a very original (well, not that original) Cosmopolitan calls for 1 1/2 ounces of vodka, 3/4 of an ounce of cranberry juice, 1/2 an ounce of Cointreau or triple sec and 1/2 an ounce of lime juice.

But then go on playing with the amounts as per your taste and it will still taste awesome. But make sure to get that pink-red hue on that drink otherwise as far as I’m concerned, it won’t pass as a glamorous and sexy beverage. I’m sure most will agree.

And if you are a lover of cocktails, try these as well.

My Tart Green Apple Martini made it one of the top 10 cocktails to try on New Year Eve on simplymaderecipes. Here are a few more:

Not-So-Fruity Sangria

Stirred Mango Margarita

Lime-Limencillo Martini

  • 2-ounce vodka. I used Kettle One
  • 1 TBSP Triple Sec or Orange Liqueur. I used Grand Marnier.
  • 3/4 ounce (1 tablespoon + 1 1/2 teaspoons) Cranberry Juice
  • 3 teaspoons fresh lime juice (you can use less)

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice
  • Add vodka, triple sec/orange liqueur, cranberry juice and lime juice
  • Shake the cocktail shaker for about 30 seconds until well chilled. Then, strain into martini glasses.

With this glamorous drink, I’m raising a toast to all the wonderful, gorgeous women out there who keep their head high and don’t let the pain of stilettos and mile-high heels register on their faces.

Cheers and Happy New Year! 🙂

I’m scrappy, weird and goofy. I’m a snob when it comes to a LOT of things.., Mainly – coffee, wine and chocolates. I laugh loud and yell louder. I run fast, but walk slow. I love walking long walks with a hot mug of coffee held tight between my hands. I have lonely eyes and a kind heart. I forgive but rarely forget. I remember the silliest of things and forget important matters. I love to run, read, cook and entertain. I draw inspirations from anything and everything aesthetic. There are numerous people who have and still continue to enrich my life in many good ways. I will remain indebted to them – Always. My dad is my biggest fan when it comes to cooking. I could see his eyes light up every time I serve something. My mom’s agility and affectionate nature that reflects on her food is something I’m still trying to master. Travel fascinates me amongst other things. Leave me in Venice and I would get lost in its timeless beauty – The canals. The piazzas. The art. The espresso. Leave me in NYC and I would tirelessly walk the length and breadth of the city (after all, There is always something open 24 hours a day). Through this blog, I am hoping to bring in my passion and love for a few things – Cooking, Travel, Kids, Coffee, Clothes and in the interim learn more myself. Hope I am able to do justice to my PASSION.

  1. Bookmarking this for when I get home! As always you make rockin drinks that don’t look too complicated to make. I am currently loving Grand Marnier! My mom used to soak peaches with them and a scoop of vanilla Icecream

  2. You know what’s sad? I was starving for one of my favorite drinks (Cosmo) for my birthday when I started living abroad in Spain and they didn’t know what it was. I did a few places and none could make me a delicious Cosmopolitan. Sad story! So now…to make it a good ending… I can make it at home (still Spain) with your recipe! Genius!

  3. Sex and The City is my all time favorite show and I secretly wish my name was Carrie sometimes lol. I just recently started watching the show again and then I stumbled onto your post about their favorite cocktail! The world is funny sometimes. Thank you for giving me the back story on this iconic cocktail, I’m off to make my own cosmopolitan and binge watch some SATC!
